Early Release September 8, 2023

September 7, 2023

Good Afternoon,

Tomorrow, concludes a very successful opening to the 2023-2024 school year despite the heat and humidity. I would like to relay the following information regarding the forecast and how it relates to school on Friday:

School administrators and custodial staff have been monitoring temperatures in classrooms and common areas throughout the schools. This has occurred on a daily basis. As you would expect, temperatures in some rooms are warmer than other rooms, just as some schools are overall warmer than others.

Teachers and staff have addressed the increasing temperatures through the use of fans, frequent hydration, low lighting, moving to cooler locations in the buildings, and providing low impact activities so that students do not get overly hot. All this has been helpful as we manage “the dog days of summer” temperatures but we are going to make a change for Friday, September 8, 2023.

Due to the fact that some buildings are experiencing a build up of heat from the past few days and haven’t been able to fully cool down, school hours will be modified for Friday. We will be running on a “half day” schedule with the plan to vacate the buildings for the hottest part of the day. Middle school and high school students will be dismissed at 11:15 and elementary students will be dismissed at 12:30. Lunch will be provided prior to student dismissal.

Please note that as we navigate the weather and temperatures currently, and heading into the winter months, you as parents/guardians always have the ability to decide whether to send your student to school or hold them out based on your own family circumstances. Should that ever be the case, please communicate that information to your student’s school directly.

Thank you to everyone for making this week successful for our MSAD #60 students.

Sincerely,

Audra Beauvais

Superintendent of Schools
